Hello Kitty is my Cheerleader
Join me this Saturday at 10:30 am PT for a FREE workshop adventure
Last weekend, I spoke on the infamous Ray Dolby Ballroom stage in Hollywood, where I pitched my workshop to hundreds of writers in person and online. It was nerve-wracking, not because I wasn’t prepared but because I knew I wanted to nail it. I wanted to be entertaining as well as convincing that these writers would select me to experience the magic of this workshop I created.
I began with a story about how Hello Kitty was the first journal I remembered as a third grader. As I waited to be called up on stage, I randomly(or not) sat next to a woman who had this cup:
Meow!
Hello Kitty called with a blue light beaming down as a sure sign the throat chakra would be open to present the pitch confidently and clearly. She was a loving steady for many of us growing up in the 80s with her cute one-dimensional face adorned on many tzochkes from stickers, pens, stuffed animals, clothing, and more. A timeless global phenomenon that has been around since 1974 bridges cultures in a universal language of cuteness and friendship.
This one-dimensional character with no mouth speaks volumes.
My third-grade Hello Kitty soft-cover journal, with a white background, had an image of a black outline of her face, little dots of a nose and eyes, whimsical whiskers, with her generous red bow, sat at a blue writing desk. I suppose this one-dimensional character had a lot to write about because she doesn’t have a mouth.
Hello Kitty was most certainly cheering me on as I went FIRST onto the stage out of 20 other writers who were about to present. Nothing like ripping off the Hello Kitty bandaid! (Yes, there are Hello Kitty bandaids.)
What is the point of me sharing this story?
Because of a free-writing gathering, a third-grade memory dislodged from the depths of my mind. The memory of how the jaws of a chair became a metaphor for parts of my life. And writing this story peeled back another layer of healing on this journey of being human.
What is journaling?
It’s a practice similar to mindfulness, where we write to record thoughts and feelings on the page. It can help to work out a problem, recall memories, or heal past hurts. It can be a practice to manage anxious thoughts or manage a stressful situation. Writing in this free-form space can also gain a sense of your values and strengthen your joy and resiliency.
In this workshop, I create a safe space using brief mindfulness practices with unique themes, images, and quotes to prompt the writer to dislodge old memories or ignite new stories to be told. As a facilitator, I encourage active listening, which in turn allows the writer to write uncensored and freely, resulting in confidence and increasing self-esteem as a writer.
If you’d like to learn more about the “Jaws of the Third Grade Chair,” please join me at this Saturday’s workshop for one hour at 10:30 am PT.
