It was a pleasure to speak with Jennifer on this episode about her years of teaching the craft of writing, particularly focusing on memoirs and how the genre can expose humanity’s universal truths. We touch upon the Hero’s Journey and what that means for writers and our society only a week post-election in the U.S.
I became acquainted with her work while leading an experiential book club at A Writing Room community on her book Deep Memoir: An Archetypal Approach to Deepen Your Story and Broaden Its Appeal.
When I reached out to Jennifer to let her know of this, she was excited, came on to meet with us, and I led an interview with the writers. It was a great conversation!
Fast forward and here we are in conversation about her work, the importance of memoirs in today’s world, and how recognizing archetypes in our own stories can bring us to humanity’s universal truths. We spoke about the craft, archetypes, and creative responses to writing about trauma.
This book is a companion to her co-written Nautilus Gold award-winning book, Deep Creativity: Seven Ways to Spark Your Creative Spirit. She also teaches courses on “Deep Vocation” and “Deep Longing,” so you sense a theme here with the word “deep” which comes from her doctoral degree in depth psychology.
Jennifer will be teaching at A Writing Room this month which is included in the membership.
You can also find her on her website to learn more about her books and where she is teaching. If you are a writer, I highly recommend taking one of her classes.
